Rotem's research is focusing on evaluating benthic biodiversity along the Israeli coast of the Mediterranean Sea using an innovative method of Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS). By combining the usage of traditional taxonomical tools and cutting edge technologies of metabarcoding and next-generation sequencing, the ARMS usage allows credible identification and comprehensive monitoring of multiple taxa, including unrepresented groups of cryptic and tiny organisms which are otherwise often overlooked. The usage of ARMS provides a broader understanding of local biodiversity and assist the efforts of establishing new marine reserves as well as expanding the territories of existing ones.
